Sixty-four years is a long time between sporting milestones. For the Philippines, the wait for its best Asian Games medal haul since 1962 has finally found its moment.
At the 2026 Asian Games, Team Philippines brought home 29 medals: four gold, nine silver, and 16 bronze. Carlos Yulo delivered twice in artistic gymnastics, EJ Obiena soared to gold in the pole vault, and Jeus Gabriel Derick Yape struck gold in virtual taekwondo. Behind them stood a much wider cast of athletes, from boxers and archers to esports competitors, martial artists, and team-sport standouts.
Not every victory came with gold around the neck. Some came one hard-fought match, one final attempt, or one podium finish at a time. That's the thing about a medal tally: the numbers are easy to count; the work behind them is not.
Twenty-nine medals. Four golds. And a reminder that national sporting pride is rarely the achievement of just one star. (APJ)
